Incorporated in 1969, our Foundation is a nonprofit organization with members in all 50 states and several countries.  We seek to preserve the Lewis and Clark Trail and stories so that future generations will want to follow the journals, paddle the rivers, explore the lands, and greet descendants of tribes who originally met the Corps of Discovery over 200 years ago.  We actively promote public and private involvement in the legacies of this journey which stretched from sea to shining sea.  We especially teach young and old that the lessons from this amazing event spanning 1803-1806 still have meaning for us all today.

The object of your mission is to explore
the Missouri River, and such principal streams of it, as, by its course and communication with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, whether the Columbia, Oregon, Colorado, or any other river, may offer the most direct and practicable water-communication across the continent for the purposes of commerce.
– Thomas Jefferson   1803
